Murus
A wall
Murus (plural muri) is a Latin term that is most commonly used to refer to an ancient Roman wall. While murus has been used to describe specific types of walls - such as city walls or defensive walls - there is little consensus among scholars as to what type of wall murus is specifically supposed to refer to (Murray, 1875). Other Latin terms are sometimes used to describe specific types of walls, such as paries - which has been translated as “wall of a house” in some contexts, and appears to represent a partition of sorts that seems to be less significant than a murus in scale (Murray, 1875). Murus could therefore be generally applied to any wall in the Roman world, in part due to the variety in its use throughout Latin literature as well as modern scholarship.
